I had a great weekend that involved the band and a special guitar. Here's the story.
A few weeks ago, I was driving home one Saturday night, listening to 95.5 KLOS on the radio. The DJ said that Eric Bloom (Front man of Blue Oyster Cult) met an artist and together decided to create special one of a kind guitars. Each would be custom made and painted by the artist and each would be inspired by a BOC song. She mentioned Eric's site www.ericbloomguitars.com for those who are interested.
Since I've been a BOC fan since the 70s, I went to the site to have a look. Six guitars were shown there. Two of them "The Reaper" and "Black Blade" were already taken. There were four left and I wanted to get one of these collector's items, so I sent an email to Eric Bloom as instructed on the site.
The next afternoon, (I swear I'm not making this up) I was playing "Godzilla" on Guitar Hero, when Eric called. I didn't hear the phone of course because the music was too loud. But Eric left a message and I called him back and we talked for about 20 minutes. He said he didn't want these guitars to go to just anyone, which is why he wanted to talk with me first. By the end of the conversation we decided that "The Monster" was going to me - special delivery.
In this case, special delivery meant 4 friends and I went to the BOC concert in Las Vegas this weekend. Eric played the guitar during "Godzilla" and then presented it to me back stage, after the show.
This guitar is truly a work of art. You can see it here: http://ericbloomguitars.com/series1b.asp
The concert was great. Eric Bloom is a really cool guy. I also met Buck Dharma and the tour manager. I took pictures with Eric and my pals as the guitar was presented.
Blue Oyster Cult has been around for over 30 years and the three original main members (Eric Bloom, Buck Dharma and Alan Lanier are still playing together. Their new bass player played like I've never seen it done before and did a great solo. Buck - well you'd never know that he is 50 something the way he played.
And to top it off, the next day we drove to Palm Springs to meet up with Alicia and Cristina to go to the Coachella Music Festival. Even though Madonna was good, I'll take BOC over the whole lot in that festival any day. All in all it was a great weekend.
:thumbsup
