I have a pretty good life here, but from time to time im rudely reminded that im not in America any longer.

4 weeks ago i woke up and my morning ritual consists of stumbling thru the kitchen to use the bathroom, make coffee. So away I went to start my day.I made it all the way thru making coffee and going back into the kitchen to get my first mug of joe, when 2 feet from my head I heard a loud hissing noise, turned in time to see a bright green snake atop my water cooler getting ready to bite me in the face.I jumped back like in world record time and called the island snake collector and he came over and removed a very healthy Golden Tree snake,a rear fanged semi venomous snake that can actually glide from tree to tree. While not deadly they are very "bitey".

So then 2 weeks ago same ritual, but this time I didnt even make it to the bathroom when I damn near stepped on a small black snake doing the 2 step in the same direction I was going. After the first incident I wasnt nearly as shocked and once again called the snake guy. However this time my uninvited visitor wasnt a simple tree snake. The snake guy was very excited as he picked it up and informed me that I had a baby King Cobra in my kitchen! Now before you say oh im lucky it was a baby, understand that the babies are actually more toxic then the adults cuz they cant deliver the volume of venom that adults can,so its venom is more potent. If he had by chance been coming at me instead of away from me I surely wouldve stepped on him and prolly wouldnt be around to write this.

Then last week I flew to Singapore to leave Thailand to renew my visa(remember my KL story?)so I arrive into Singapore and promptly walk upstairs and catch a flight back to Thailand,Bangkok to be precise.I get into BKK,and go out to look for models, and as im returning to my hotel i meet this frantic German lady who is babbling on about tanks and soldiers in the streets. So I go upstairs to my hotel room and turn o the TV and get very vague reports as to what is happening there, then about an hour later, the cable is cut off as is the internet.Very scary to say the least.
As it turned out the coup was bloodless and I actually went and took photos of the tanks and soldiers a few days later.

So its a never ending adventure here, always something to remind me Kansas is a long ways away.

you need a pet mongoose!

im not a big fan of snakes..bitey, squeezy or any other kind
as with spiders i have tried to maintain a mutual non-agression pact.

my only visit to BKK (so far) and i fell victim to the water...
not a pleasent vacation (at least those few days)
and of course it was only a week after the tsunami too,
so no beaches to visit...

If this coup thing settles down and a stable government can prevail
a visit might be forthcoming...travel abroad is so tricky (read dangerous)
for a white american these days...feel like I have a target on my back.

Glad to hear you're safe...

What does the snake guy do with the snacks, and does he charge buy the foot or the pound.

He's this perpetually unshaven British guy who really likes snakes. He does it for free, but I always give him a tip,and he typically lets the snakes go up in the jungle but he said he was gonna keep the cobra for a bit to give it a "head start" on life.

The next time you find a snake in your kitchen just click your heels...

Or maybe you should put some screens on your windows and close your doors.

If you pay the guy accordingly, he' ll prepare it for you. Yeah, if he came between 2 and 4 that would qualify as snack time.

I prefer more than just a snack and would rather do it myself. If you boil it in coconut milk, add a dash of vinegar to take away the pungence, and some lemon grass, bamboo shoots, and chiles, you have a delicious entree.

But if you're just thinking snack, then marinate in thai chili oil with garlic, lemon, and achiote. Add soy sauce to taste. It cooks fairly quickly, around 2-4 minutes a side on a grill. Don't forget the Sriracha Thai Chili Sauce for dipping. Enjoy!!
